Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty involves reducing the size of the stomach using an endoscope. This means a camera is inserted from your mouth, into your stomach and stitches are placed from inside the stomach. The advantages of this procedure are that there are no cuts on the abdomen.
However, one of the biggest disadvantages of this operation is that it has no hormonal effect. It is a purely restrictive operation that reduces the size of the stomach and thus there is no natural reduction in appetite – only restriction. Thus, over time, patients can gain weight with this procedure and as such, the indications for this procedure are far and few in between.
