Determining whether or not you are a candidate for weight loss surgery at The Obesity Clinic would require a thorough evaluation of your individual case by Dr. Rishi Singhal. However, there are some general criteria that can help determine if you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery.
Multiple guidelines have been published internationally for suitability of bariatric surgery. The International Federation of Surgery for Obesity is the body that governs bariatric surgery across the world. They recently published their guidelines in October 2022. According to these guidelines, the BMI thresholds should be adjusted for the Asian population. A BMI of more than or equal to 25 is now considered as obesity for the Asian and especially Indian population.
Indians with a BMI of more than 27.5 should be offered bariatric surgery.
Metabolic bariatric surgery should be considered for all patients with metabolic disease and a BMI between 30 and 35kg/m2. Overall, bariatric surgery should be offered for all patients with a BMI of over 35 regardless of the presence of any comorbidities. These guidelines have now been endorsed by the Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI).
At the Obesity Clinic, we tailor solutions to you. We will understand your needs, your comorbidities and then offer you a solution which is not only the best for you medically, but also financially. In addition to your BMI and health status, Dr. Singhal will also evaluate your medical history, current medications, lifestyle, and personal goals to determine if weight loss surgery is the right option for you. If you're interested in learning more about weight loss surgery and whether or not you may be a candidate for treatment at The Obesity Clinic, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Rishi Singhal.
BMI stands for body mass index. It is a value that is calculated on the basis of your weight and height. It is important to look at your BMI since a tall patient may have the same weight as a short patient, however, the levels of obesity will be different in the two patients mainly because of their height. BMI stands for Body Mass Index, which is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It is a widely used tool to determine if a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared (BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2).
The BMI thus takes the height and the weight into account, calculate a number. A BMI less than 25 is considered to be appropriate for the Asian population. Recent guidelines published by IFSO have suggested that a BMI of more than 25 is considered indicative of obesity in the Indian population. In order to calculate your BMI, please input your height in kg and your height in cm and the calculator below will give you your value.
A BMI of 18.5 or less is considered underweight, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight, a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. However, it's important to note that BMI is just one tool to determine overall health and should not be the only factor used to determine if someone is a candidate for weight loss surgery or other medical treatments.
Dr. Rishi Singhal and his team at The Obesity Clinic will take a holistic approach to evaluating your candidacy for weight loss surgery, taking into consideration a variety of factors such as your medical history, lifestyle, and personal goals to determine the best course of treatment for you.
Obesity is a multifactorial disease. It is very important to know at the outset that obesity is not a lifestyle choice. The presence of obesity depends on a host of factors. Some of the important factors are genetic factors, environmental factors and to an extent, personal factors. This means that patients who are overweight are likely to have children who are more likely to be overweight or are more predisposed to be overweight. Thus, obesity, to an extent, can be considered to be genetically linked and runs in families.
However, this is not the only important factor for obesity. The are also environmental factors too. What are these environmental factors? If in a household, some people are overweight, eating habits of the entire household may change and thus, all individuals within that household may consider being overweight as being appropriate. Thus, you may notice sometimes that the spouses of an overweight person are also overweight and vice versa. Environmental factors can act on their own in synchrony with genetic factors. However, there are many personal factors too. This may include food choices, ability to exercise and work-life balance. In order to further understand the etiopathogenesis of your obesity and the best treatment, please arrange an appointment with one of our experienced Bariatric Coordinators to understand this better.
Obesity can have a wide range of negative health effects, including an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, and certain types of cancer. It can also have a negative impact on mental health, including an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.
